Before installing the Grass Gator onto you trimmer, you have to remove your original line head from your trimmer as a single unit by unscrewing it off. Do not remove the spool and line to do this. The OEM head will unscrew off your trimmer by hand, and you have to unscrew the head to the right because it is on a left hand threaded shaft. The trimmer's shaft needs to be secured before the head will unscrew from the trimmer.

There are three basic methods on gas trimmers used to secure the shaft: directly above the original line head you will find either a large exposed nut that you can hold with a wrench or pair of pliers, a narrow metal collar with a small hole or U shaped slot that you can insert a tool into, or a hole in the metal housing just above the head that also requires the insertion of a tool (nail, drill bit, or the small round tool that is generally supplied with the trimmer).

The next step is to locate the nut or bolt from the Grass Gator kit that fits the exposed shaft of your trimmer. Make sure that it is a good fit, and don't force it. Set the nut or bolt aside and locate the correct adapter in the kit to fit your trimmer. Insert the adapter into the recessed area in the Grass Gator spool housing.

Locate the nut or bolt that fits your shaft and place it into the recess area in the adapter.

Take the Grass Gator housing with the adapter and nut or bolt and slide it onto the exposed shaft on your trimmer> Use the Grass Gator head as a wrench and screw it on until hand tight. There should be no play on the shaft.

Place the spool spring on top of the adapter.

Install the Grass Gator spool and spool cover into the spool housing.

Congratulations! You are now ready to use the Grass Gator.
