Special Installations

There are 3 different versions of the OEM fixed line style head: metal spool housing, the older version with just the fixed line head and the newer version that has a black "knob" underneath. We are sorry to say, we don't fit trimmers with the metal spool housing.

Fixed line head, no black spacer "knob" underneath

This version requires some modifications to both the original and the GrassGator kit. These modifications will not damage the original head which can be re-installed and used again if desired.

1. Remove the nut or bolt that holds the original head in place.
2. Remove the bottom half of the head. Leave the top part on.
3. Remove the metal guides.
4. Find the spacer cup from the GrassGator kit and slide it over the shaft, close side facing out.
5. Mark where the spacer cup hits the plastic raised guides on the original head.
6. File down the plastic guides on the original head. This will let the spacer cup sit flat against the the top part of the head.
7. Slide the spacer cup over the shaft, close side facing out. Install a washer.
8. Find the nut or bolt from the GrassGator kit and drop it inside the hex shaped hole on the bottom of the GrassGator.
9. Slide the GrassGator over the shaft, hex shaped hole facing the ground. Keep turning the GrassGator until tight.
10. If there's no up and down play and the GrassGator is tight and secure then the installation is done.

Remember, due to the modified installation method the only GrassGator heads we recommend for these type of trimmers are:

3600, 5600, 5620 or 8010.

Fixed line head with a black spacer "knob"

These models have a fixed line head with a black spacer knob underneath. There are 2 ways of installing a GrassGator head. The first option will let you use the new replacement head right away but you'll have the old head on top of the new one. The second option is using the adapter kit we have developed to fix the issue. The adapter kit will take care of the extra space and center the head on the shaft. This kit is free of charge. To install the GrassGator without the adapter kit:

1. Remove the bottom nut.
2. Remove the black knob.
3. Remove the double sided bolt. Leave the original head on.
4. Find the bolt from the GrassGator kit that fits the shaft.
5. Drop the bolt inside the hex shaped hole on the bottom of the GrassGator.
6. Slide the GrassGator over the shaft and keep turning until tight.

To install the adapter kit:

1. Remove the whole original head off including nut, knob, double sided bolt and head.
2. Slide the metal adapter over the shaft with the hex shaped hole facing the ground.
3. Insert the male hex shaped side of the plastic adapter inside the hex shaped hole on the bottom of the GrassGator.
4. Find the bolt from the GrassGator kit that fits the shaft.
5. Drop the bolt inside the hex shaped hole in the plastic adapter.
